St. Anthony has decided to go in a different direction in regard to its boys basketball head coach. Mark Tovey took over the reins for the 2010-2011 season, and compiled a 53-35 record during his three years at the helm.
St. Anthony athletic director Kevin Palmer released this statement to the Daily News on Friday.
"Due to the reorganization of teaching staff and positions being consolidated, a teaching position was eliminated," he said. "We've also decided to go in a different direction with the head varsity basketball coaching position. We'd like to thank coach Tovey for his many contributions to St. Anthony in the past three years and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors."
Tovey also taught physical education at St. Anthony High School. Prior to St. Anthony, Tovey led the Okaw Valley and Lovington programs. At Lovington, Tovey led the Panthers to a 26-2 record in 2004-05, including a Class 1A regional title.
St. Anthony will now begin a new search for its next head coach, and Palmer said he hopes to hire the program's next leader in the next few months.
"We're going to be advertising for a coaching position," he said, "We would hope to have a new coach in place by mid-April."
