Some homecoming traditions never get old, as far as Stew-Stras is concerned. Once again, the Comets rolled to a Homecoming Hatchet Game victory over rival Windsor on Thanksgiving Eve, 89-46.
In the past 20 years, Stew-Stras has owned the series. Windsor broke through a few times,most recently with its Sweet 16 team in 2010, sweeping the Stew-Stras Homecoming and the Windsor Homecoming Hatchet Games. The latest edition tipped off on Wednesday night and it was the same old Stew-Stras school song. The Comets cashed in from the arc and had a big man in the middle, once again, too much for Windsor to hang with.
Windsor stayed with the Comets for a while. It was 10-8 after 3:30 of play, and 15-11 with 2:46 to play in the 1st. After Trey Leasher hit a three for Windsor with 1:21 remaining it was just a six-point game, 20-14. Jason Becker answered with a short jumper and it was 22-14 heading intothe 2nd frame. Then the Comets streaked, busting open the game with a 22-10 run in the 2nd period. Guard Brandon Helmuth had a deuce and a trey and another deuce and a trey fro 10 points in the period, matching the Blue Devils. With 36.9 seconds left in the 2nd, the Comets worked the ball and ticked itdown to just two seconds, when Helmuth buried a trey to beat the half-time buzzer. Stew-Stras went into the locker room up by 20, 44-24.
Windsor had had an early advantage at the line, getting into the bonus with 6:00 left in the 1st half and only committing one foul themselves. It was enough of an advantage. They were already down 26-14. Stew-Stras was up 10 with 3:19 in the half, when center Justin Fulk got a bucket and the foul. Helmuth hit his second triple of the game and the lead was 14 with 2:25 in the half, 37-23. The Comets finished the half with a 7-1 run. Windsor competed better in the 3rd, only falling four points further back, as 6-foot freshman Tristan Warner started looking to score. He put in three buckets and went to the line for seven free throws. He made two, for 8 of his team-high 12 points.
However, Christian Vonderheide made 2 of his 7 treys in the 3rd and Jason Fry 2 of his 3 triples, extending the Comet lead to 24 points, 66-40. The Comets kept the pedal to the metal in the 4th, but Windsor, with a short bench, started to fade. Vonderheide made his 6th and 7th 3-pointers, Fulk scored another seven points in the period and four other Comets chipped solo scores. Windsor only managed three buckets in the final 8:00 and missed five free throws.
