Eagels soar to super-sectional

LEBANON —      After dropping the first set 25-19 in Thursday night’s championship match against Lebanon in the Class 1A Lebanon Sectional, the St. Elmo Eagles dominated the second set, winning 25-9.

Next, the Eagles, who now have a 29-9 record, will try to keep their winning streak going in the Valmeyer Super-Sectional today at 4 p.m. They’ll have their work cut out for them, as they’ll take on the host school after a long road trip.

St. Elmo’s senior-laden starting lineup showed resilience and poise in recovering from a tough opening-set loss on Thursday night.

Savannah Feezel, the school’s all-time leader in kills, added 10 more kills against Lebanon. Seniors Katie Stites and Megan Maxey each added six kills of their own. Maxey also led the team in digs, with 17.

Perry Manley set up the offense beautifully, amassing 31 assists against Lebanon. She also added 14 digs for good measure.

The victory gave St. Elmo its first sectional volleyball championship in school history and sent them to the Elite Eight for the first time.

Valmeyer advanced to the super-sectional round via a straight-set, 25-23, 25-18 victory in the Marissa Sectional tournament on Thursday. Valmeyer sports a 29-9 record to match St. Elmo.

The Eagles defeated Woodlawn in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday to set up their match against Lebanon. St. Elmo won the match in straight sets, 25-14, 25-13.

If the Eagles win this afternoon, they’ll advance to the state tournament, to be played Nov. 9-10 at Redbird Arena in Normal.
