St. Anthony boys play well, but fall at Kentucky shootout
MAYFIELD, Ky. — St. Anthony High School played what Coach Matt Britton believes to be its best game yet Saturday, but the Bulldogs were still defeated by highly-regarded Bowling Green (Ky.) High School.
Playing at Graves County High School in Mayfield, Ky., St. Anthony took a 70-58 loss to the Purples without the services of senior Myles Baker, who missed the road trip due to prior obligations.
Taylor Worman stepped up and led the Northsiders with 24 points, while James Jansen scored 18 and Ryan Schmitt chipped in 10.
"Our best performance of the year," said Britton. "The kids showed a lot of heart against a great opponent. This was a great experience for our kids."
Chane Behanan, a junior transfer to Bowling Green, paced the Purples with 23 points.
Behanan is a nationally-ranked 6-foot-7 forward drawing interest from a plethora of Division I programs — including Big Ten schools like Ohio State and Purdue along with Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee and West Virginia, to name a few.
Bowling Green (3-0) also got 20 points from D.J. Ray, along with nine from Joey Gorman.
St. Anthony's other contributors included Alex Lustig with three points, Kit Koerner with two and Marty Jansen with a free throw.
Worman knocked down four three-pointers in the contest, while J. Jansen hit a pair.
The Bulldogs were 8-for-10 from the foul line, while Bowling Green was 14-for-25. Behanan was 7-for-13 in that department.
The Purples led 22-17 after a quarter and 43-30 by halftime, but Britton's club showed some resilience after intermission and didn't allow the contest to get out of hand.
St. Anthony is off until Saturday, when it will resume National Trail conference play at Dieterich.
