Beecher City, St. Elmo fall at Cumberland tourney
TOLEDO — Martinsville edged Beecher City and Newton downed St. Elmo in opening round play of the Cumberland High School Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening.
Martinsville trailed Beecher City 17-12 after the opening quarter, but came back to take a 33-30 halftime lead. The Eagles pulled back and knotted the score at 45-45 going into the final quarter when Ben Kemme tallied six points in the third period and Dan Lagerhausen and Cole Ohnesorge knocked down a three apiece.
But the Bluestreaks came back with a final 21-19 run to edge the Eagles.
Beecher City was led by Luke Levitt, a 6-foot-2 junior, with 23 points. Also in double figures was Kemme with 13.
In the second game, Newton placed three players in double digits to down St. Elmo 57-44.
Newton edged out to a 19-12 opening quarter lead behind Peyton Wyatt's and Japheth Bear's eight points each. St. Elmo remained close, trailing just 32-28 at halftime as Nathaniel Maxey tallied 13 of his team's 16 points in the second quarter.
St. Elmo pulled even closer going into the final period and trailed only 39-38. But Newton came roaring back with an 18-6 final period run. Wyatt connected on six points, hitting two of two at the line, while Alex Frohning tallied 10 points with five of five at the line.
Wyatt finished with 23 to lead Newton, while Frohning added 18 and Bear chipped in with 12.
St. Elmo was led by Maxey with 21 and Ben Sperry with 10.

Cumberland cross country lacks experience, has potential
The Cumberland Running Pirate cross-country teams will look to rebuild this year after a solid, but not stellar, 2009 season that saw the Pirates finish seventh in IHSA regionals.

Hearts make statement with opening win

Newton built a 26-7 lead through the first 32 minutes of Saturday afternoon’s season opener against Prairie Central only to see the Hawks score three consecutive touchdowns for a one-point lead with less than seven minutes to play in the game.

Bulldog tough
The St. Anthony soccer team is on the rise. Head coach Scott Demers thinks so. The Bulldogs, who struggled to win more than two games in seasons past, finally broke through in 2009 and finished with an 8-8-1 record. That was Demers’ first season, and for his second season he thinks the Bulldogs can achieve even more.

Effingham boys’ golf coach Jeff Schafer is excited about the possibilities for his team this season. Despite losing Pat Viverito and Cody Hartke to graduation and Colby Glover’s decision not to play this year, Schafer said this year’s Hearts could be the deepest team he’s had in his 11-year tenure.
