Pairings released for Charleston Holiday Tournament
CHARLESTON — Pairings are out for the 32nd Annual Charleston Boys Basketball Holiday Tournament, and Edwardsville High School has been awarded the top seed.
St. Anthony High School has opted to come back after playing at the Breese Mater Dei tournament in recent years. The Bulldogs' reward for making a one-year reappearance before beginning its own holiday tournament next year? A first-round matchup with Metamora.
St. Anthony plays the Redbirds at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27 in the meet's first game. Metamora currently sports a 5-2 record with wins over Canton, Peoria Notre Dame, Macomb, Washington (top 10 team in Class 3A) and Galesburg.
The two losses were to Woodruff and a tough one to Dunlap. First-year coach Jim Youngman has his team playing some strong ball with 6-foot-9 senior Zeke Schneider leading the way.
Schneider, who averaged 20 points and seven rebounds a game last year, is a legitimate Division 1 college recruit; reported schools of interest have included Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville among other out-of-state universities.
It's a bit of a surprise Metamora missed out on a top-four seeding along with Sewickley Academy out of Pennsylvania, which is reportedly well-regarded in its home state.
St. Anthony, Metamora, Sewickley, Edwardsville, Cumberland, Paris, Rantoul and Canton are on one side of the 16-team bracket (the last one before the format switches to eight-team pool play next year), while the other half features Effingham, Charleston, Mattoon, Mahomet-Seymour, Tolono Unity, Sullivan, Taylorville and No. 2 seed Robinson.
Effingham's first matchup is a 5:30 p.m. Saturday game against Tolono Unity; it will play either Mattoon or Mahomet-Seymour on Monday, Dec. 29.
Girls Tournament
In the girls tournament at Charleston High School's Baker Gym, St. Anthony and Effingham must play each other in the first round as they face off in a 3 p.m. Saturday game.
Either second-seeded Charleston or Decatur Eisenhower await the two city schools depending on the outcomes of each first-round game.
Altamont's draw wasn't favorable, as it must play No. 1 Edwardsville in its 12:30 p.m. Saturday opener.
Teutopolis opens Saturday play at 9 a.m. when it takes on Tri-County (Kansas). Its next opponent would be either Robinson or Taylorville.

That was Demers’ first season, and for his second season he thinks the Bulldogs can achieve even more.
