Friday baseball roundup
STRASBURG — Clayton Brandt's big day at the plate and a solid start on the mound from Chris Koontz were key factors in Stewardson-Strasburg High School's season-opening 6-1 win over visiting Okaw Valley (Bethany).
In the Comets' first baseball action of the spring, Brandt singled, doubled and hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to break an early 1-1 tie, while Koontz struck out seven in four innings of work to notch the win.
Luke Rincker and Kyle Helmuth also threw for Stew-Stras (1-0). Helmuth also hit an RBI single, while Steven Thomas and Zach Rincker ad the other two Comet hits.
Stew-Stras continues play Monday when it hosts Arcola at Knop Field.
