Micah Jones, a senior center for the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City girls basketball team, had plenty of options when it came to choosing a college.
She had offers from four Division I schools and plenty of Division II and Division III schoools, but ultimately chose to continue her basketball career at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
For Jones, the decision to head to Edwardsville was easy.
“They’re close to home, I like the coaches and the campus was nice,” she said.
As far as where she’ll be playing when she takes the court, Jones said SIUE coach Paula Buscher hadn’t talked about that yet.
“She hasn’t talked about positions,” Jones said. “I doubt I’ll play (center) though; I’m pretty short compared to all those girls.”
But, no matter where she ends up playing, Jones said she’d just like the opportunity to get on the court for Buscher’s Cougars.
“I hope I get to play,” she said.
Buscher has had her eye on Jones for a while now, having recruited Jones to play at Bradley until she took the SIUE job in June and convinced Jones to head to Edwardsville instead.
At SIUE, Jones will join another former standout player from the Effingham area. 2012 Teutopolis graduate Jessie Wendt is currently playing for the Cougars.
Through three years of high school basketball, Jones had tallied an impressive 1,430 points — 419 as a freshman, 500 as a sophomore and 511 as a junior.
She’s also amassed 951 rebounds, 242 blocks, 160 steals and 274 assists so far, totals she hopes to increase significantly this year.
Last season, she also helped lead a talented CHBC team to a 29-4 record (best in school history) and a second-place finish in the state tournament.
But, though her college future has been secured, Jones said she still has some business to take care of in high school.
“I would like to get out of regionals again,” she said. “Then we’ll take baby steps after that.”
The Hornets have already jumped out to a 1-0 record to start this season, defeating South Central 50-14 on Monday night.
CHBC is back in action tonight, taking on a talented Central A&M team that routed Neoga on Tuesday, 91-36.
