Wooden Shoes start off with win

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Teutopolis came out as the home team Thursday, and despite playing the game at Sullivan High School, the Shoes had no problem starting the season with an 8-2 win.

The game was initially scheduled to be played in Teutopolis, but was moved to Sullivan as the Teutopolis field was not yet ready.

The Wooden Shoes struck early, grabbing two runs in both the first and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. Sullivan scored twice in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2 off starter Madison Cowman.

It wouldn’t last, as Teutopolis scored one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth and would never look back.

“I was real happy with a lot of what I saw out there tonight from many different girls,” said Teutopolis coach Rich Niebrugge.

Cowman earned the win, striking out four over five innings while allowing two runs on four hits with a walk.

Annie and Kadi Borries carried the day offensively for the Shoes. Annie Borries was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI, while Kadi Borries went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI. She also pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Cowman.

Holly Dust had two RBI on the day, while Allison Apke and Tara Stephens each knocked in a run.

Teutopolis (1-0) takes on Dieterich today at home at 4:30 p.m.
