Newton makes LIC title

NEWTON — The Lady Eagles will move on the Little Illini Conference title game following their 46-42 overtime win against Olney Tuesday night.

It took a herculean fourth quarter to even force overtime, as Olney led 32-23 going into the final frame. Newton held them to just four points and forced overtime, where Andrea Cartright, Morgan Swingler and Carly Niebrugge led them past the Tigers.

It was Newton's second straight OT win in the LIC tourney.

Swingler scored 19 points to lead the Lady Eagles, and Cartright added 12 points.

Newton plays for the LIC title Thursday night against Marshall.

Mater Dei downs Teutopolis

Teutopolis was dealt its first loss in the Highland tournament, falling 51-40 to Breese Mater Dei.

The Shoes fell behind early and never recovered, trailing 28-18 at the half.

They will now play in the consolation bracket, still in the running for fifth.

Madeline Hartke had 19 points to top Teutopolis. Chelsey Hardiek and Danielle Repking each had seven points.

Teutopolis will play Okawville Thursday.
