Monday girls regional roundup
FARINA — Dieterich High School opened the Class 1A South Central Girls Basketball Regional with a victory over North Clay (Louisville), 56-48.
North Clay came out strong with a 15-9 opening quarter lead as Alyssa Fender tallied five points. The Cardinals held a 30-22 halftime lead on the Movin' Maroons as they hit seven free throws in the second period.
But the Maroons came back in the third period with a 12-6 run behind Chelsea Storm's six points. Dieterich then put together a 22-12 final quarter to pull out the victory. Storm and Miranda Goodman finished with 15 points each as Candace Niemerg tallied 12 for the winners.
North Clay was led by Fender and Andrea Buhrmann with 13 points each and Alyse Cox with nine.
Dieterich moves on to face top-seeded Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City tonight at 6.
In a regular season game Saturday, North Clay downed Edwards County 41-29.
The late game at South Central saw the third-seeded host's season come to an abrupt end in overtime against No. 6 Brownstown/St. Elmo.
The Bombers (10-15) were 50-46 winners thanks to an 11-point overtime period; Brittany White scored four of her eight in the extra frame, while Abby Hill finished with 15 and Brooke Maxey added 11.
After winning the program's first-ever region a year ago, South Central (17-7) got 15 from Audrey Mantheny and 13 from Abbey Jones. The Cougars were ahead 25-24 at halftime, but had to spend the fourth quarter recovering from a one-point effort in the third stanza.
Brownstown will face No. 2 Altamont tonight at 8.

At Casey
Newton saw its season come to a close in the Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional.
The Eagles went up against the homestanding Warriors and lost 58-48. Terra Flowers and Mallory Kocher advanced in the Country Companies Three-Point Showdown.
Casey-Westfield advances to meet top-seeded Paris Wednesday at 6 p.m. Robinson takes on Marshall in the second contest.
At Albion
Edwards County (Albion) picked up an opening round win in its own Class 1A Regional.
Edwards County downed Cisne 52-27. The Lions will move on to face top-seeded Red Hill (Bridgeport) Wednesday at 6 p.m. Noble takes on Wayne City in the second game.
At Neoga
Tri-County (Kansas) and Palestine/Hutsonville were opening round winners in the Class 1A Neoga Regional.
Tri-County downed Oblong 45-20, while Palestine/Hutsonville blasted Martinsville 71-12.
Tri-County will meet top-seeded Neoga tonight at 6 followed by Cumberland taking on Palestine-Hutsonville at 8.
At Mount Carmel
Two Little Illini Conference teams met in the opening round of the Class 2A Mount Carmel Regional.
Flora handed Lawrenceville a 44-36 defeat. Flora was led by Lauren Putbrese with 20 points.
The Wolves now take on top-seeded Olney at 6 p.m. Wednesday followed by Fairfield against Mount Carmel at 8.

The Cumberland Running Pirate cross-country teams will look to rebuild this year after a solid, but not stellar, 2009 season that saw the Pirates finish seventh in IHSA regionals.

Hearts make statement with opening win
For one team, it was a confidence-builder. For the other, it was a good test of a new offense. When the final point hit, Effingham had defeated crosstown rivals St. Anthony two sets to one in the season volleyball opener for both squads.

Strong pitching leads St. Anthony to a win
Ben Hecht’s two straight hits allowed in the top of the first inning that led to an early St. Elmo run were an aberration. A moment’s lapse in an otherwise strong pitching performance.

Three of the richest events at the recently completed DuQuoin State Fair harness racing meet went to locally-based horses, led by an encore performance by Illinois State Fair champion Powerful Charger.

Eagles rally for win in season opener
Newton built a 26-7 lead through the first 32 minutes of Saturday afternoon’s season opener against Prairie Central only to see the Hawks score three consecutive touchdowns for a one-point lead with less than seven minutes to play in the game.

Bulldog tough
The St. Anthony soccer team is on the rise. Head coach Scott Demers thinks so. The Bulldogs, who struggled to win more than two games in seasons past, finally broke through in 2009 and finished with an 8-8-1 record. That was Demers’ first season, and for his second season he thinks the Bulldogs can achieve even more.

Seniors on his roster is one thing Effingham soccer coach Kurt Roberts is not lacking. The Hearts have 11 seniors on their 18-person roster, but it’s experience at the varsity level Effingham is mainly lacking with Logan Arney — a two-year letterwinner — supplying most of it.

Effingham boys’ golf coach Jeff Schafer is excited about the possibilities for his team this season. Despite losing Pat Viverito and Cody Hartke to graduation and Colby Glover’s decision not to play this year, Schafer said this year’s Hearts could be the deepest team he’s had in his 11-year tenure.
