Wrestling postseason underway

MATTOON — Mount Zion won the team championship of the Class 2A Mattoon Wrestling Regional Saturday.

The Braves tallied 213 points followed by Mount Vernon 180, Carbondale 129, Mattoon 124, Marion 118.5, Centralia 97, Effingham 41.5, Decatur Eisenhower 23 and Charleston 13.

Mount Zion advanced 11 wrestlers to sectional competition, three of those finishing in first place.

The top three places advance to sectional competition. Effingham advanced two wrestlers after both finished third place in their divisions.

Dyllan Rincker, a sophomore, captured third in the 112 pound division. Alex Vosburgh of Mount Vernon won the division, while Carson Hayes of Mattoon took second.

In the 135 pound division, Cody Harpster captured third place. Blake Stricklin of Mount Vernon took the top spot, while Lucas Volpe of Mount Zion finished second.

The two EHS wrestlers will head to Springfield Friday for the sectional tournament.

At Toledo

Vandalia was the team champion in the Class 1A Cumberland Regional with 218 points.

The top squad was followed by Shelbyville 140.5, St. Joseph-Ogden 120, Fithian Oakwood 110.5, Cumberland 103, Effingham St. Anthony and Danville Schlarman.

Vandalia had four first-place finishes in the meet and advanced a wrestler in every weight class except 171 pounds.

St. Anthony had two wrestlers advance, while Cumberland had five going on to sectionals. The top three places advance on to sectionals at Robinson.

Heading to sectionals for the Bulldogs are Nate Gray, who finished in first place in the 140 pound class and Blaine Reiss, who took third place in the 112 pound division.

Cumberland wrestlers advancing are Zach Poe and Clay Wilson, who took first place in the 125 and 171 pound divisions respectively. Also heading to sectionals are Jim Kruse, who took second in the 189 class, Evan Casey, who finished second in the 215 division and Devan Henderson, who took third in the 130 pound class.

The Bulldogs, who struggled to win more than two games in seasons past, finally broke through in 2009 and finished with an 8-8-1 record. That was Demers’ first season, and for his second season he thinks the Bulldogs can achieve even more.

    Effingham boys’ golf coach Jeff Schafer is excited about the possibilities for his team this season. Despite losing Pat Viverito and Cody Hartke to graduation and Colby Glover’s decision not to play this year, Schafer said this year’s Hearts could be the deepest team he’s had in his 11-year tenure.
