EFFINGHAM —
St. Anthony struggled with ball security throughout most of Tuesday night’s game against Effingham in the Effingham Round Robin Tournament.
And for three quarters, those turnovers didn’t hurt the Bulldogs. Effingham didn’t capitalize on its extra scoring chances and couldn’t push its lead past four points in the first 24 minutes of action.
The Hearts went into the fourth quarter leading by three, but the tide was already starting to turn in their favor. After making just 1-of-7 3-pointers in the first half, Effingham knocked down three in five attempts in the third quarter.
That momentum carried into the fourth, as the Hearts (13-6) shot 75 percent from the field in the final quarter and used an 18-2 run to pull away from the Bulldogs (5-16) for a 51-34 victory against their crosstown rivals.
The loss dropped St. Anthony to 0-2 in tourney play, while EHS is 1-0.
“A couple years ago when we played them we were 1-for-22 in the first quarter, and we were only down by two,” Effingham coach Jeff Schafer said. “We hung in there and hung in there and played good enough defense. You just never know what lineup is going to show up.”
