EFFINGHAM —
St. Anthony didn’t shoot well from the floor in Monday night’s Effingham Round Robin Tournament game against Centralia. But luckily for the Bulldogs, neither did the Orphan Annies.
Still, Centralia found a better shooting touch late and benefited from a bevy of Bulldog turnovers to defeat St. Anthony 42-21.
“Defensively, I thought we played pretty well,” Bulldogs head coach Bart Wiedman said. “We just really have to make buckets.”
The Bulldogs, already undermanned without key contributors Kate Richards and Maggie Brown, only made nine total field goals in the game and had as many turnovers as points.
“Centralia plays pretty good defense,” Wiedman said. “But we weren’t concerned as much with the turnovers. That’s something we’ve been working on this season. I’m just concerned with shooting the ball well, which we didn’t do tonight.”
Neither the Bulldogs (5-15) nor the Annies (12-6) could buy a basket in the first quarter. Centralia’s first three points came on foul shots, as did St. Anthony’s first point. The Annies’ Annie Holtkamp finally knocked down a field goal with 1:32 to play in the quarter. St. Anthony’s Lena Grunloh returned the favor 20 seconds later, netting the first Bulldog field goal on a drive with 1:11 to play.
Katie Bishop tied the game at 5-all with just over 30 seconds remaining, and the teams went into the second quarter with the same score.
Centralia pulled away in the second quarter, though, scoring six points in the first six minutes to take an 11-5 lead. Bishop helped the Bulldogs keep pace a bit, scoring four of her team-high 10 points in the quarter, but St. Anthony’s nine turnovers kept the Bulldogs from ever truly catching the Annies.
Still, they were only down 19-11 going into halftime. Wiedman said that another long field goal drought in the third was the real dagger for his team.
