EFFINGHAM —
A local company known for its innovative computer desks is being featured on a national television show Monday.
Effingham-based Nova Solutions will appear on "World's Greatest! ... ." The fast-paced program features interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of unique companies, products, people and travel destinations from around the globe.
Nova was selected for its integrated technology that is being used in classrooms around the nation Ñ the Trolley monitor lift and Downview monitor placement systems. The Trolley is a fully automated monitor lift system for flat panel displays that raises the screen from its hidden position
beneath the desktop while the Downview keeps it below the work surface at an ergonomic angle that is viewed through a tinted-glass viewport. The desks are primarily used in colleges and universities, including Lake Land College, Eastern Illinois University and Kaskaskia College.
The television show contacted a number of companies that manufacture technology furniture, and Nova was selected from a list of 12, according to Jerry Doll, Nova's vice president of sales and marketing.
In addition to Nova's unique product, the company also was chosen because it is locally owned and operated and all its products are made in the United States.
"Not many exist anymore with those key factors," said Doll.
The three-minute segment was filmed Oct. 6 and will air Dec. 17, 24 and 31 on ION. A television crew spent a day at the Effingham manufacturing plant shooting footage for the segment that also will feature installations filmed by Nova.
Although the desks, which the company has been manufacturing since 1988, are geared toward education, businesses also have bought into the integrated technology.
"We've supplied equipment for Midland States Bank and Washington Savings Bank," said Doll.
The segment also will feature a sneak peak of a new product Nova plans to unveil early next year. The product, still a prototype, stores and syncs digital tablets.
"We're still working on software for it," said Doll, who added the function is similar to a DVD player.
"You slide the tablet in and it syncs and charges it in the classroom," he said.
Doll said the technology helps secure the tablets in the classroom and allows teachers to control the content on them. As the devices become more prevalent in the classroom, the feature solves the problem of lost or stolen tablets and unwanted content.
"We're expecting to release it by the end of March," he said.
