Bank plan gets plan board nod

EFFINGHAM — Fifth Third Bank is one step closer to constructing its new facility at the corner of North Third Street and East Jefferson Avenue, as the Effingham Plan Commission Tuesday approved the bank’s site plan.

The 5,295-square-foot building at 200 E. Jefferson Ave. will face the south, or City Hall. A customer parking lot will be constructed between the bank and Jefferson Avenue, or on the south side of the bank, with approximately 20 parking spaces.

An employee parking lot will be constructed to the northeast of the bank, as the bank’s property is an L shape. Entrances will be located off Jefferson for the drive-up, North Second Street for the employee parking lot and off North Third Street, near the corner.

The four-lane drive-up facility will set on the north side of the building.  The property, zoned B2, general commercial, allows for a banking drive-up facility.

Commissioners approved the plan, subject to the signature of the owner on the plan, correction of legal descriptions, approval from Illinois Department of Transportation, the city’s purchase of right of way for any work done on North Second Street and storm sewer runoff calculations.

Fifth Third’s current banking facility, which sets directly north of the proposed construction, will be renovated as the Helen Matthes Library after the new bank building is constructed.

The board also approved a site plan for the Effingham County Memorial Airport at 14449 E. 1100th Ave. south of Effingham to allow construction of an 8,100-square-foot corporate jet hanger.

The proposed building, which will include restrooms and a small office, will set between the existing hanger and terminal. The county’s airport authority recently approved the site plan, as well.
