Local YMCA closing after charter revoked
Effingham County Family YMCA is closing its doors Oct. 1.
In a letter given to members, the local board of directors said they have been meeting with Y of the USA officials for several months. However, the national organization voted to revoke the local charter, ceasing operations at the facility Oct. 1.
While the fitness facility is closing Sept. 30, the Y's sports programs will finish out the season, according to the letter.
The board is hoping to work with the Mattoon YMCA and are currently negotiating with them to take over the local Y youth sports program. However, in the event the Mattoon Y does not provide assistance with the program, the local board stated in the letter it is communicating with other area agencies.
