WINDSOR —
A Teutopolis man was among two men killed Monday afternoon when the tanker truck he was driving collided with another semi.
Shelby County Coroner Brian Green said in a prepared statement that James W. Painter, 49, was pronounced dead at 1:25 p.m. by Chief Deputy Coroner David Friese at the scene of the accident on Illinois 16 about two miles west of Windsor.
Painter had been eastbound on Illinois 16 at 12:25 p.m. when his 2005 Freightliner collided with a westbound Garda Armored Courier truck driven by James W. Adair, 65, of Troy. The Illinois State Police said in a telephone news release that Painter was trapped inside the cab of his truck and died as a result of the fire that engulfed his vehicle upon impact.
Also pronounced dead at the scene was Harold E. Keck, 70, of Mascoutah, a passenger in the armored vehicle. The ISP said Keck had been wearing his seatbelt, but was ejected from the truck nonetheless.
Police said Adair was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon with injuries of an undisclosed severity. His condition was unknown because the hospital no longer releases condition reports.
The ISP said Adair had been trying to pass a stopped vehicle on Illinois 16 near its intersection with Shelby County Road 1290 East when the collision occurred. Adair was ticketed for improper overtaking on the left.
The anhydrous tanker had been empty at the time of the crash, the ISP said.
An inquest is pending into both deaths and the accident is being investigated by the ISP, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the Shelby County Coroner.
