WHEELER —
A house fire Monday in Wheeler had firefighters on scene for hours to control the blaze.
At 4:15 p.m., Jasper County Sheriff's office received a call about a house fire at 13123 N. Main St. in Wheeler. Dieterich Fire Protection District responded and a full still was called.
Black and gray smoke billowed out of windows and the roof hours after the fire started. By the time fire departments left the scene at 8:14 p.m., the smoke had mostly subsided.
Teutopolis, Montrose, Wade, Effingham, Watson, Sigel, Shumway and Edgewood were called to the scene. Firefighters from Atlamont, Shumway and Edgewood also were on hand.
The resident, Mary Malloch, told firefighters she arrived home to find the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Illinois Fire Marshal's Office.
Dieterich Fire Chief Jason Hayes said the departments cooperated to control the fire and heavy smoke damage safely.
"Every department there did an excellent job," he said.
Hayes said the house may be a total loss due to extensive smoke damage throughout.
"There were a couple of rooms that were just filled with smoke," he said. "It spread through and went right up into the attic. There was quite a bit of damage. Structurally, there might be enough that it might be a loss but some personal items and valuables might be salvageable."
