Gas Wars

Motorists see drop in gas prices on south side

EFFINGHAM — Motorists on the south end of Effingham are seeing a drop in gas prices after a new station opened its doors recently.

The price of unleaded gasoline at stations on South Banker was $3.14 a gallon Thursday afternoon, nearly 25 cents cheaper than most other stations in town.

The lower rate may be attributed to a new Phillips 66 station that opened recently with lower gas prices than many other stations.

“We’re trying to set the lowest margin we can,” said store manager John Johnson. “Get the price low, so we get the volume up.”

Johnson said the station, which has yet to be named, has a 4 or 5 cent price margin above the wholesale price.

“Normally, people around here do 20 cents,” he said.

People have been noticing, according to Johnson, who added business has picked up.

Danny Lilley is one driver who took advantage of the lower price Thursday.

“From where I am, it’s $3.35,” said the Coffeen resident.

A disabled veteran on a fixed income, Lilley watches prices closely.

“I look to save whenever I can,” he said.

Effingham resident Greg Seggelke isn’t getting excited over the reprieve.

“They jump up and down every day,” he said of fluctuating gas prices. “They’re up in the morning and down in the evening. I’m tired of it.”

Still, other drivers weren’t aware of the price difference, simply stopping along the way.

“I live close by,” said Heather Brown as she was filling up Thursday.

Jumpin Jimmy’s and Mach One Food Shop gas prices on South Banker also were at $3.14 Thursday. Jumpin Jimmy’s declined comment and a phone call to Meyer Oil Co. was not immediately returned Thursday.
