SIGEL —
A 3-year-old Chicago girl was killed Monday morning when the sport utility vehicle she was riding in crashed on Interstate 57 just south of the Effingham-Shelby county line.
Effingham County Coroner Leigh Hammer said Kendall McDonald was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 8:40 a.m. Illinois State Police said the accident occurred at 7:32 a.m. Monday.
Police said young Kendall had been riding in a northbound 2004 SUV driven by her mother Muriel Davis-McDonald, 42, of Chicago on I-57 at milepost 168. Police said the SUV went off the roadway to the left. After the driver overcorrected, police said, the vehicle went off the road to the right, overturned several times and came to rest in a ditch east of the roadway.
Hammer said the little girl died from traumatic head injuries. She had not been in a child safety seat.
The group was on their way home to the Chicago area from a family gathering in Mississippi.
Davis-McDonald was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Her condition was unknown Monday night.
Seven passengers in the SUV were all taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment. Two of the seven — Crystal Altman, 50, and Kennedy McDonald, 7, both of Chicago — were listed in critical condition Monday evening.
Amber McKinley, 18, of Chicago was listed in serious condition at Carle, while the other passengers were listed in fair condition. They included Kimberly Buckles, 39, of Country Club Hills; Evan Ortiz, 7, also of Country Club Hills; Shavonia Watson, 21, of Chicago; and Edward McKinley, 17, of Chicago.
Police said only Davis-McDonald and Ortiz were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
