EFFINGHAM —
Plans for Nuxoll Food Center expansion will come to fruition within the next month as the family-run business relocates to South Banker Street.
The store, currently located at the corner of South Fifth Street and West Kreke Avenue, will be upgrading from 3,000 square feet to almost 5,000 feet.
"The city's ecstatic about having a bigger grocery store on the south end," said Fred Nuxoll Jr., the third generation to operate the store. "They've been pretty gracious, working with me on this."
The idea to move came five years ago, he said.
The Fifth Street location has minimal parking, and its proximity to South Side School makes traffic difficult at certain parts of the day.
"We ran out of room," Nuxoll continued. "We're bursting at the seams (in this building)."
The new store, just a few blocks west of the current location, has a few more changes to undergo before the move can be made.
The building will be dry-walled later this week, among other necessary changes.
The move should take place between the last week of January and the first week of February.
Size and location aren't the only changes the almost 80-year-old business will undergo this year.
"We want to expand our line," Nuxoll said, citing grocery, frozen foods, seafood, lamb and special cuts as prospective products.
The store currently stocks fresh beef, pork, chicken and homemade sausage and strives to offer hormone- and antibiotic-free meat.
Among its other products, Nuxoll Food Center sells canned and boxed goods, condiments and more.
The store may also accept more forms of payment.
Cash and check are the only accepted forms at the Fifth Street store.
"We'll probably be taking them (credit and debit cards) over there," Nuxoll said.
After settling in and gauging the needs of the expanding business, he may add to his staff.
Nuxoll currently employs four staff members who are "pretty close-knit -- like family," and could hire up to two more employees.
Nuxoll Food Center has survived as big chain stores have entered the Effingham area.
A great location, repeat customers and the promise of "three generations of quality service and products" could make the business even more successful.
"The location is going to be perfect," Nuxoll said. "We have a lot of loyal customers, and a lot come from out of town. It will be nice to have easy access for people to get in and out, and no more problems with handicap access. It's a good move all around."
