TEUTOPOLIS — While recent rains may have saved this year’s soybean crop, the village foreman here says Teutopolis still has a water shortage.
Consequently, Carl Pals said, village residents should refrain from unattended lawn watering in these final weeks before the first frost.
“Water usage was really up these last couple of months,” Pals said. “What we’re trying to avoid is these sprinklers that run all day long, back and forth.”
Pals said water levels in village wells are only about half what they normally are, the lowest in several years. Even though the village could buy more water from Effingham, Pals wants the village to be as self-sufficient as possible.
“We know Effingham has plenty of water, but we want to use our own as much as we can,” he said.
Pals said conservation could help the village stave off winter shortages.
“My fear is this situation could continue through the winter,” he said. “We’re not out of it yet.”
