Max Oakley

TOLEDO — Max Leonard Oakley, age 68, of Toledo, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Mattoon Health Care Center, Mattoon, with his wife at his side.

Max was born in rural Toledo, on Oct. 19, 1944, the son of Leonard Owen and Mamie (Martin) Oakley. When he was an infant his family moved to Toledo where he lived most of his life. On Oct. 20, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Lee Freeman, the daughter of Everett and Helen Freeman at Toledo Christian Church. They were married by Pastor Jim Wolford and they shared 50 years together.

Max joined the United States Army in 1963 and did a one year tour of South Korea and returned to the United States and was sent to Vietnam. After being discharged from the service, he worked at Youngs Radiator and was an over-the-road truck driver.   Max enjoyed watching football, boxing, hunting, fishing and trapping. He enjoyed teaching and passing on his passion of his hobbies to his son. He liked to refinish old furniture and was good at it.

Max was always willing to help out his fellow veterans in any aspect from getting benefits or taking someone to the doctor. Whatever need to be done he would volunteer to do it. He never took or received any money for anything he did. Often he would use his own money when there was a need. He was an early organizer of the Cumberland County Veterans Association; life member of Disable American Veterans, Greenup American Legion Post 566; the 40&8 and the First Infantry Division. He was also a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Greenup.
