Freddie "Fred" Gallagher, 77, of Mode, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. today, Jan. 7, at First Christian Church, Cowden, with the Rev. Tim Boyd officiating. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until service time today at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Cowden; Camp New Hope or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Fred was born Nov. 17, 1935, in Mode, the son of Kenneth Worthington and Edna Mae Syfert Gallagher. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the class of 1953 and then served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Joan Hood on Dec. 28, 1958. They lived in Carlsbad, Calif., before moving back to Mode. Fred was a lifelong farmer and worked as a technician for the Soil Conservation Service in Shelby County until his retirement in 1997. He also owned and operated Twin Oaks Sporting Clays in Mode for more than 20 years.
Fred enjoyed hosting Hunter's Safety Courses at Twin Oaks. He was a member of First Christian Church, Cowden, and the Masons. He was a past president of the Stewardson-Strasburg School Board, serving on the board from 1969 to 1985. He served on the Volunteer Fire Department in Pasadena, Calif., and later in Mode.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Steve Gallagher (wife, Kendra) and Jeff Gallagher (wife, Denise), all of Mode; and grandchildren, Cody and Brock Gallagher, Dustin and Haley Gallagher and Daniel Rieman.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Gallagher; mother, Edna Gallagher Prosser; and stepfather, Max Prosser.
