WHITEHORSE, YUKON, CANADA —
Michael Dehn, 65, of Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, in Whitehorse.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorials may be made to CPAWS (www.cpaws.org, and donors will need to specify “for the Michael Dehn Memorial Fund.”)
Michael M. “Mike” Dehn was born in Chicago on July 23, 1947, the son of George and Maxine (Brenner) Dehn. He grew up in Shumway and graduated from Effingham High School in 1965. He earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois, a master’s degree in economics at the University of Toronto and PHD in biology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.
Mike loved the outdoors and decided to dedicate himself to work at preserving the environment in the region where he lived around Yukon, Canada. He worked to unite the indigenous peoples of the area (First Nations) in order to fight to keep the Peel Watershed unspoiled. This watershed is nine times the size of Yellowstone Park. He was named the executive director for the Yukon at Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) where he became a driving force in the fight to preserve the Peel, a position he held until ill health forced him to retire in October 2012.
Mike is survived by his mother, Maxine Dehn of Effingham; sister, Martha (Missy) Kubitschek of Indianapolis; and brother, Matthew of Kemah, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father; and brother, Marc.
