Virginia Rose Spencer “Starky,” 90, of Newton, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson.
Funeral services celebrating Virginia’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, with the Rev. Louis Youngs officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton. Visitation for family and friends will be from 11 a.m. until service time. In loving memory of Virginia, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Support Fund; Chapter FN of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarship Fund or First Presbyterian Church. Virginia Rose was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Jasper County, the daughter of Wilmer and Edith (Kittle) Stark. She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Moore Spencer, on March 25, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo., and he preceded her in death on June 27, 2012. Virginia was a 1940 graduate of Newton Community High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newton; Chapter FN of P.E.O. Sisterhood; Ladies Auxiliary of the Jasper Post 20 American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary of the Newton VFW. Virginia was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing bridge.
Virginia is survived by children, Mark (wife, Jennifer) Spencer of Mesquite, Texas, and Marsha (husband, Phil) Gearing of Dallas; six grandsons; one granddaughter; four great-grandsons; and seven great-granddaughters.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband.
