John W. Salyers, 75, of Newton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at Bogota Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Honey Cemetery, Bogota. Crain Funeral Home, Newton, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial gifts for John may be made to the donor’s choice. John was born Dec. 21, 1936, in Jasper County, the son of Louis Burton and Bessie Alene (Stanley) Salyers. He married Cressie June Bailey Jan. 29, 1955; she survives. John was a retired semi driver having owned and operated his own truck. Through the years, he drove for Effingham Equity, Holt’s Lumber and Tempco Product Co. In later years, he owned an engine repair shop in Newton. John’s memberships include the Bogota Baptist Church and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed being outdoors and liked to hunt, fish, camp and garden.
John will be loved and remembered by his wife of 57 years, Cressie Salyers of Newton; son, William “Bill” Salyers of Altamont; daughters, Regena Dossey and Lisa Wetherholt and husband, Scott, all of Newton; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Salyers of Wheeler; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, George Salyers and wife Rosemary of Newton, Gene Salyers and wife Ann of Henderson, Ky., and Richard Salyers and wife Carol Ann of Flora; sister, Linda Meyer and husband Steve of Effingham.
His parents; son, Wesley Salyers; two great-grandchildren and sister, Stella Marie Salyers, preceded him in death.
