KANKAKEE —
Donald Joseph Harris, 84, resident of Kankakee, died at 11:20 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Riverside Hospital.
A memorial service in Donald’s honor will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Schreffler Funeral Home in west Kankakee. Burial will be Thursday in Fairview Cemetery, Sidell. Visitation will be two hours to service time at the funeral home. Memorial gifts in Donald’s name may be given to the American Heart Association.
Born 12 June, 1927, in Effingham, to Wendell W. and Justine Bonharme Harris, Donald was an accountant/systems analyst for the United States Army. A graduate of the University of Illinois, his career included work at Ammunition Procurement & Supply Agency (APSA) in Joliet, the U. S. Army Engineer Division in downtown Chicago and with Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont. Donald was a war veteran, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict as a medic in the U.S. Navy.
During the Korean Conflict, Donald was stationed in the Pacific on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Bremerton. Among his military involvements after World War II was the de-commissioning of Navy Pier, Chicago. Donald was an avid card and cribbage player, was a great lover of dogs and also TV westerns.
Donald is survived by his wife of 62 years, Laura L. Fausett Harris; son and daughter-in-law, Steven J. and Laura Byarley Harris of Rolling Meadows; sister-in-law and husband, Frances and James McIntyre of Newman; and several nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Anne Harris Randolph.
