CHATHAM —
Jesse (Jess) A. Martin, 65, of Chatham, formerly of Effingham, died at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, with the Rev. Ruby McDowell officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a 6 p.m. Elks memorial service at the funeral chapel. There will be a luncheon following the service at the Effingham Elks Lodge. Jess was born on Nov. 12, 1947, in White County, to Lloyd and Lillian (Bohleber) Martin. He married Connie (Burns) Shadowens on Aug. 10, 1974, in DeSoto. He graduated from Carmi High School in 1965 and later graduated from SIU in 1971. Jess worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation, as a civil engineer, working in Effingham for most of those years and retiring from the Springfield office. He obtained his professional engineer license in 1977 and was named engineer of the year in 1983.
Jess was a member of the Effingham Elks, where he enjoyed playing Santa for several years. He was very active in the Effingham Park District girls’ softball, and worked hard making Evergreen Park home for the girls’ softball. Jess also coached the Dairy Queen Girls’ softball team. In retirement, he enjoyed fishing in his backyard, and taking trips with his wife.
He was a loving, caring husband, dad, grandpa and friend, who is survived by his wife, Connie; son, Jeffrey (wife, Ann) Shadowens of Newport News, Va.; daughter, Jennifer (husband, Randy) Lash of Virden; daughter-in-law, Ginny Shadowens of Florida; granddaughters, Brittany Shadowens of Effingham and Lilly Lash of Virden; grandsons, Ryan Shadowens of Effingham and Dalton Shadowens of Florida; sister, Judy (husband, Chuck) Crowe of Greenfield, Ind.; brother, Keith (wife, Judy) Braizer of Harrisburg; brother-in-laws, Gene (wife, Anita) Barrett of Carbondale, Vince (wife, Debbie) Burns of Pinckneyville and Bob (wife, Dale) Burns of Murphysboro; sister-in-law, Susan Burns of Lake St. Louis; his two best buddies, Lukas and Lane Lorton of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews. He was a very loving and caring person who touched many lives and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, James (Jim) Shadowens.
