Melvin E. Conner, 96, of Mason, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont, with the Rev. Paul Olson officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 26, at Gieseking Funeral Home and one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Melvin was born on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1916, in rural Altamont, Mound Township, to Daniel and Lora (Yates) Conner. He was a World War II Army veteran. He married Phyllis Smith on May 3, 1941, at the Methodist parsonage, Altamont. He was retired from Stateville Correctional Center, Joliet. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church and a member of the Effingham County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Mason; son, Colin Conner (Margie) of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughters, Gweneth Boyer of Port Aransas, Texas, Evelyn Olson (the Rev. Paul) of Carol Stream and Yvonne Flanigan of Mason; brother, Wayne Conner (Joan) of St. Elmo; sister, Marilyn Lilley of Hammond, Ind.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and family friend, Bob.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rita Cargle; one brother; three sisters; and three sons-in-law.
