OBLONG —
Duane “Bake” Baker, 86, rural Oblong, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Ridgeview Care Center, Oblong.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 22, at the Pulliam Funeral Home, Oblong, with Jack Kilburn officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Washington Street Cemetery, Casey. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 22, at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to the Oblong High School FFA or Oblong Music Boosters with envelopes at or may be mailed to Pulliam Funeral Home, P.O. Born in Grandville Township, Jasper County, on Dec. 19, 1926, he was the son of Grover Cleveland “Cleve” Baker and Mable Irene (Tumelson) Baker. He was a graduate of Oblong High School Class of 1944. He was a lifelong grain and livestock farmer in Crawford and Jasper Counties. He was affiliated with the Central United Methodist Church, Oblong. Duane was a member of the Robinson Elk’s Lodge 1188; member and former director of the Crawford County Farm Bureau; served on the Oblong Grade School Board for several years; he was one of the first people to do the tractor pulling at the Crawford County Fair.
On April 1, 1950, Duane married Mary Imogene “Jeanie” Walling, who survives. They were married for 62 years.
Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerry and Cindy Baker, Oblong, and Randy Baker, Newton; a nephew, Dale Fielder, Oblong; and a niece, Darlene Ferguson, Cleveland, Tenn.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mildred Fielder and Christine Dorrough.
