Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Shumway. A parish wake service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday for those wishing to attend. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Jonathan was born Jan. 11, 1983, in Effingham, the son of Gerald and Jeane (Schlanser) Wernsing. He married Janice (Vandeveer) on Sept. 12, 2009. Jonathan was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shumway and the Effingham Knights of Columbus Council 665.
Jonathan was a great husband, exceptional father, loving son and good friend. He always had a smile to share with family and friends, both old and new. He loved being outdoors and believed in involving youth in the outdoors. Jonathan became the first president of the Whitetails Unlimited Central IL Chapter. This chapter’s first banquet is in the top 10 most successful in both the United States and Canada. He was also involved with the NRA, Illinois State Rifle Association, NWTF, Ducks Unlimited, Quail Forever, Effingham County Farm Bureau and the Effingham Elks.
He was looking forward to moving to his family farm and to be in the country so that he could be a mini farmer with his food plots and sunflowers. Jonathan was excited about the everyday progress he was helping to make on his family’s future home. He definitely lived life to the fullest and was always “just living the dream.”
Jonathan is survived by his wife, Janice of Effingham; daughter, Jessica Danyel and expected child; parents, Gerald and Jeane Wernsing of Effingham; sister, Michelle (Mike) Barns of Altamont; two sisters-in-law, Jennifer (Brad) Newlin and Julie (Patrick) Zuber; and nieces and nephews, Hannah and Hunter Barns, Charley and Blake Newlin, and Owen Zuber.
Jonathan is preceded in death by his sister, Danyel; and grandparents, Jim and Beulah Schlanser and Alfred and Della Wernsing.
