EFFINGHAM —
Raymond Doral Backs, 87, of Effingham, formerly of Altamont, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, in Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont, with the Rev. James F. Wright officiating. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park, rural Effingham, with military rites provided by the Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post 7676, Altamont. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.giesekingfh.com.
He was born March 14, 1925, to German immigrants, Ben Meinders and Rienelde Siemens Meinders. The youngest of 11 siblings, Ray was adopted as an infant after his mother died shortly after his birth, by Henry F. and Laura B. Backs of Mason. Ray married Henrietta Moon in 1948, and together they had three children, John and twins, Delbert and Deborah. He was a World War II Army veteran.
A very energetic and outgoing person, Ray worked tirelessly for Vita Craft for more than 40 years, where he achieved much recognition and numerous awards as one of their top cookware salesmen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his beautiful 18-acre property near Altamont. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont; Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and American Legion Post 120, both of Effingham.
Ray is survived by his children, John (Terry) of St. Ignatius, Mont., Delbert (Kelly) of Bloomington, Ind., and Deb Pals (Dave) of Teutopolis; four grandchildren, Andy, Desirae, Lindsey and Ben; and two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Rosie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta, in 1987; his adopted brother, Dale Backs; all of his Meinders siblings; and his grandson, Brandon.
