Ellen Jiter

SHELBYVILLE — Ellen Jean Jiter, 90, of Shelbyville, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, in Shelby Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Shelbyville, with the Rev. E. Wade Helmkamp officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Shelbyville, or Trinity Lutheran School, Stewardson. Mrs. Jiter was born on May 23, 1922, in Stewardson, the daughter of Andrew and Anna Mae Higgins Friese. She was a graduate of Stewardson High School and Sparks Business College in Shelbyville. She married James T. Jiter on April 25, 1944, in Fort Morgan, Colo. Ellen was a bookkeeper for Hygrade Cheese Company and later for the Oliver Corporation, both in Shelbyville. She served as deputy treasurer of Shelby County while her husband served as treasurer. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both of Shelbyville. Ellen enjoyed working in her flower garden, writing poems and playing the piano. Her camera was always ready for taking pictures at the church and elsewhere. Ellen was well known for her drop cookies with pink frosting. Her life revolved around her church and family. She will be missed dearly, but her memory will be treasured forever.

She is survived by her three children, Peggy Russell and husband Harry of Shelbyville, Jerry Jiter and wife Lynn of Antigo, Wis., and Brad Jiter and wife Penny of Shelbyville; seven grandchildren, Kyle Russell of Denver, Colo., Blair Russell and fiancee Macy of Holly Springs, N.C., Brent Jiter and wife Mary Jo of Kenosha, Wis., Kristin Meyer and husband Eric of Antigo, Wis., Anna Jiter of Antigo, Wis., Brady Jiter and wife Sarah of Normal and Whitney Jiter and wife Ann of Waldron, Ark.; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Clinton Friese of Stewardson; sister, Mary Keen of Stewardson; brother-in-law, Jay Jiter of Calif.; and sister-in-law, Neceill Thomas of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, James T. Jiter on Feb. 26, 1989.
