Sophia Michl, 96, of Newton, formerly of Ste. Marie, passed away at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton, with the Rev. Al Kemme celebrating Mass. Burial will be in St. Valentine's Cemetery in the Bend, Jasper County. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 10, at the church. Memorials may be made to the St. Thomas building fund or to St. Thomas Church for Masses. Arrangements are under the care of Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton. Sophia was born on March 30, 1916, in Jasper County, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Schuch) Hoffman. She married Lawrence A. Michl on June 4, 1936, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Ste. Marie, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2012. Sophie's greatest accomplishment was her family. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. She had many talents and hobbies such as gardening, quilting, sewing, crocheting, cooking and canning. Spending time with her family working puzzles, playing cards and bird watching brought her great joy.
Sophia is survived by eight children, Fred (Linda) Michl of Olney, Janette (David) Kramer of Georgetown, Texas, Francis (Linda) Michl of Geneva, Judy (Marty) Barrett of Gilbert, Ariz., Michael (Jane) Michl of Grand Chain, Daniel (Sandy) Michl of Murray, Ky., Mary (Roy) Toland of Newton and Jo Anne (Jack) Howard of Houston; brother, George Hoffman of Michigan; sisters, Theresa Ochs of Olney and Rosie Berkland of Oswego; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Sophia was preceded in death by her parents; son, Larry Michl; husband, Lawrence; and siblings, Frank, Alfred, Alice, Anne, Lucy, Mary and Agnus.
