Roger L. Ewing, 86, of rural Gays, passed away at 4:50 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at his residence.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, in the Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, with the Rev. Phillip Glick and the Rev. Keith Dickerson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery, Paradise Twp., Coles County, with military services conducted by the V.F.W. Post 4325 of Mattoon. Memorials may be made to the Zion Hill United Methodist Church or to the Zion Hill Cemetery, Paradise Twp., Coles County. Online condolences may be expressed at swengel-odell.com.
Roger was born March 3, 1926, in Cumberland County, the son of Clifford B. and Anna Marie (Shields) Ewing. He was a member of Zion Hill United Methodist Church in Paradise Township, Coles County, and he also served on the cemetery board. He was a former school board member of the Neoga School District. Roger married Nina J. Groves on Jan. 16, 1954, in Neoga, and Nina passed away March 15, 2010. Roger served in the United States Navy during World War II. He owned and operated Ewing’s Roto-Rooter Sewer and Drain Service since 1949. His son, James, has assisted in the business for many years. He kept busy by going to area nursing centers and churches, where he would play his harmonica. He enjoyed doing things for others and making them happy.
Roger leaves three sons, James Ewing of rural Gays, Loyd Ewing (wife, Cindy) of Powell, Tenn., and Samuel Ewing (wife, Kim) of Neoga; one daughter, Peggy Dickerson (husband, Keith) of Tualatin, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
Mr. Ewing was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nina Ewing; and one sister, Carol Hendrix.
