EFFINGHAM —
Mildred Gaylord, 88, died peaceably Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Evergreen Rehabilitation Center, Effingham, with her son at her side.
She will be cremated.
She was born July 24, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., to Charles and Ferrell Greer. She married Lawrence Gaylord in 1949. She was a wave in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1947. She lived in Nebraska, Illinois, Oklahoma and California, settling back in Effingham in the late 1970s.
Having never had a driver’s license, she walked everywhere. She was excellent at sewing and crocheting.
Many people in town own one of her ripple afghans. She never knew a stranger. She attended Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham.
She is survived by her son, Michael Gaylord of San Francisco; daughter, Patricia (husband, Samir) Nader of Virginia; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and four sisters, the youngest of whom was Paula Phillips, who at one time was states attorney in Effingham County.
