YALE —
Shirley Irene Newkirk, 79, of Yale, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Lakeland Rehab & Health Care Center, Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Barkley Funeral Chapel, Greenup. Visitation for family and friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Plainfield Cemetery, rural Rose Hill. Memorials can be made to the Cummins Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.barkleyfuneralchapels.com.
Shirley was born on Jan. 13, 1934, in Greenup, to Ray and Esther (Kitchen) Timmons. She married Harry Newkirk on Dec. 24, 1952, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2010.
Shirley was a homemaker and worked at Ettelbrick Shoe in Greenup and E.R. Moore in Newton. She was member of Cummins United Methodist Church, rural Yale.
Surviving are children, Phyllis (Jake) Miller of West Union, Allen Newkirk (life mate, Bob Keefe) of Woodridge, Fern (Mark) Kingery of Martinsville, Sylvia (Rod) Nethery of Newton and Donald (Kathy) Newkirk of Yale; sister, Corillis Kay Morey of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren with another due in July.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and one infant daughter, Nancy Sue Newkirk.
