ST. ELMO —
M. Jo Swinehart, 65, of St. Elmo, passed away March 1, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham, after a long illness.
Visitation for Jo will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont, with a memorial service following the visitation. Memorials may be made to E.A.R.S., Hospice or the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left at www.giesekingfh.com.
Jo was born on Saturday, June 14, 1947, in Perrysville, Pa., to the late Robert Culbertson and Helen (Hieber) Garvin of Wooster, Ohio. Jo married Jim Swinehart Nov. 7, 1964, in Wooster, Ohio. They had three children, Kelly (Randy) Orr and Marni Swinehart, both of rural St. Elmo, and Nicholas Swinehart of rural Brownstown. Jo received her bachelor degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Weatherford, Okla., in 1989. She was listed in the Who’s Who among college students as a result of her high GPA.
Jo worked for Hospice of Lincolnland, Lakeland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and most recently as a case worker for Senior Services of Fayette County. She enjoyed bass fishing, auctions, garage sales, resale shops, craft shows and spending time with her family. She adored her grandbabies and watched after them every chance she got. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.
Jo is survived by her husband, Jim; three children; granddaughters, Nicole Flowers of St. Elmo and Kolbi Swinehart of Brownstown; great-grandson, Bryson Arnold of St. Elmo; brother, Bob (Becky) Culbertson of Skaneateles, N.Y.; sister, Pat (Hugh) Rooney of Richmond, Va.; stepfather, Edgar Garvin of Wooster, Ohio; and her special feline friend, Maggie.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
