EFFINGHAM —
Melvin L. Hebert, 76, of Effingham, passed away at 5:22 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Drew Holloway officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Moccasin. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Effingham; Effingham Child Development Center, or the donor’s choice. Melvin was born on Sept. 3, 1936, in Effingham, the son of Mark D. and Irma P. (McManigell) Hebert Johnston. Melvin graduated from Mattoon High School in 1954. After serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, he graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a degree in accounting in 1964. His 39-year banking career began at First National Bank of Mattoon and ended when he retired from Crossroads Bank in Effingham, having been president for 27 years. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Effingham. Melvin was a lifetime member of the SIU Alumni Association, Effingham Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, fund drive co-chairman for Effingham United Way and a faithful bell-ringer for the Salvation Army.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Janis Hebert of Effingham; daughter, Amy (Brian) Bafford of Carbondale; sons, Michael L. Hebert of St. Louis, Brian L. Hebert of Effingham and Jeffrey L. Hebert of Seattle; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Adam Lee Hebert; and great-granddaughter, Ashley McWhorter.
