Marguerite VanScyoc

NEOGA — Marguerite VanScyoc, 75, of rural Neoga, passed away at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Heartland Christian Village surrounded by her lovely family.

Funeral services honoring her life will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 660 County Road 950 N, with the Rev. Randy Black officiating. Burial will be in Drummond Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 13, at Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga. Online condolences may be expressed at swengel-odell.com.

Marguerite was born July 21, 1937, in Casey, the daughter of Darrell (Bus) and Mildred Downey. She married Richard VanScyoc on Nov. 7, 1965. Marguerite was employed by Wal-Mart in Mattoon for 27 years. She was a 17-year cancer survivor. Marguerite was a dedicated member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she attended for 45 years and served as Sunday school secretary for several years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sharing precious moments on her front porch.

For more than 30 years, she enjoyed preparing meals on Sundays for her family, as well as any guests who happened to stop by. Her hobbies included daily Bible devotion, gardening, canning and reading. She was the heartbeat of her family and she will be sorely missed. Obituary written by Marguerite's family.

Survivors include four daughters, Vicki (Doug) Hock of Arcola, Melinda (Jerry) Adams of Mattoon, Kathy (Gary) Himes of Lerna and Anita VanScyoc of Neoga; five sons, Carlos VanScyoc of Vandalia, Brad (Lori) VanScyoc of Safford, Ariz., Mark Cleeton of Rhome, Texas, David (Amy) Cleeton of Neoga and Dale (Marla) VanScyoc of Neoga; one foster daughter, Alice (Brian) Icenogle; one brother, Jerry (Kathy) Downey of Casey; one sister, Kay Stepp of Marshall; 33 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents, Darrell and Mildred Downey; first husband, Morris Curtis Cleeton and second husband, Richard VanScyoc; two sisters, Wanda Kemper and Norma Himes; one son, Kenneth Vanscyoc; two grandchildren, Adam VanScyoc and Amanda VanScyoc; daughter in-law, Starr Vanscyoc; and foster son, Gary (Chod) Williams.
