EFFINGHAM —
Medford Maurice Shoemaker, 91, of Effingham, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services celebrating Medford’s life will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blake-Wright Funeral Home, Dieterich. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery, near Winterrowd. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 11, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.blakefh.com.
Medford was born Aug. 22, 1921, in Jasper County, the son of George and Pearl (Shoemaker) Gerth. He married Dorothy D. Norton on May 23, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 2003. Medford was a farmer and owned and operated Shoemaker Soil Service in Dieterich and Winterrowd for many years.
Medford was a member of Winterrowd Christian Church; Winterrowd Masonic Lodge 664; Shriner and member of the Ainad Temple; member of the Order of the Eastern Star Edgewood Chapter 787 and Dieterich Ruritan Club. Medford enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, making lights out of flower pots, raising watermelons and making pickles, which he enjoyed sharing with his friends and family.
Medford is survived by three children, Linda Packer of Effingham, Dennis (Carolyn) Shoemaker of Louisville and Alan Shoemaker of Lillian, Ala.; special friend and companion, Juanita Roberts-Lindsay of Effingham; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Medford was preceded in death his parents; wife; son, Harold Wayne Shoemaker; great-grandson, Tyler Walker; and brother, Harley Gerth, who was killed in the Korean Conflict.
