ALTAMONT —
Paul J. Berg, 87 years old of Altamont, died at 8:04 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Kinder Hospital, Springfield.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont, with the Dr. Rev. James F. Wright officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be conducted from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont. A second visitation will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 10 to 11 a.m. or the time of the funeral services at the church. For those who prefer memorials they may be directed to Altamont Lutheran Interparish School playground equipment at 7 South Edwards Street, Altamont, Illinois 62411 and or the donor’s choice.
Paul Johann Berg was born Dec. 21, 1924, in the Bethlehem Community, Effingham County, near Altamont. He was the son of John and Emma Bandelow-Berg. Paul was a baptized and confirmed member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. On June 24, 1951, Paul married Elda Beccue in Immanuel Lutheran Church. Together, Paul and Elda were blessed with six children, Dale, Dean, Paulette, Pat, Dona and Pam. While the children were growing up, in addition to raising a family, Paul spent a great deal of time being a grain and dairy farmer, besides working for over 15 years at Color Press in Effingham. He proudly served his county as a veteran of the United States Army serving in the South Pacific.
Paul was an active member of the Altamont community. He served numerous offices at Immanuel Lutheran Church, school and PTL as well as being in the Immanuel Choir. He was a member of the Effingham County Farm Bureau, the Altamont VFW Post 7676, the National and Tri-County Square dancers and the Threshermen’s Association. He was most proud of being the parade marshall along with Tannor, his horse, at Effingham County Fair harness races and St. Peter Prairie Days. For many years his team of Heidi and Tannor provided wagon rides at threshermen’s celebration as well as bringing Santa to the Altamont community during the Christmas season.
He is survived by his two sons, Dale (wife, Connie) Berg of Altamont and Dean (wife, Sherry) Berg of Mason; four daughters, Miss Paulette Berg of Kinmundy, Patricia (husband, Steve ) Robinson of Edgewood, Donna (husband, Dean) Stuckemeyer of Altamont, Pamela Kepley Ridgeway, Ind.; special friend, Shirley Dunnett Altamont; sister-in-law, Maria Berg Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Wilbert and wife Gertrude Berg; Edwin and his wife Barbara Berg; three sisters, Lillian and her husband Earl Stice, Ella and her husband Richard Rothe and Sophia and her husband C.C. Cummins.
