ST. ELMO —
Joyce L. Drees, 65, of St. Elmo, entered eternal rest at 3:08 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at C&A Pagel Funeral Home, St. Elmo, with burial to follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, rural Beecher City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to Crossroads Cancer Center, Effingham, or the donor's choice.
Joyce was born July 26, 1947, in Fayette County, the daughter of Jacob and Nora (Calvert) Brewbaker. She married Gary L. Drees on Aug. 15, 1985, and he preceded her in March 2010.
She had worked many jobs, which included the St. Elmo Food Liner for 26-plus years, cook at Ed's Cafe, Brownstown, and Daryl's Dine In, St. Elmo, the concession stand at the St. Elmo movie theater, area nursing homes, housekeeping and whatever it took to support her family.
She was member of and named Lady of the Year by the St. Elmo Ladies Auxiliary Club and also member of the St. Elmo Women Civic Club and St. Elmo HCE. Joyce was an advocate for the St. Elmo Little League and ran the concession stand.
She enjoyed cooking, mushroom hunting, gardening and beading jewelry. She attended St. Elmo First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her children, Brad Denton of Salem and Sherry (Laverne) Shamhart of Wheeler; stepchildren, Tina (David) Rubino of Maplewood, Mo., Craig Drees of Beecher City and Stacy (Bill) Barnes of Madison, Ind.; sister, Janet Stahulak of Decatur; seven grandchildren, Kendra (Chip) Lwao, Jacob, Dalton and Meagan Denton, Kylee Denton and Brittany and Blake Shamhart; one great-grandchild, Emma Lwao; four stepgrandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Denton; brother, Charles Brewbaker; and half brother; Don Brewbaker.
