Dr. Darrell E. Latch, 64, of Tuscola, formerly of Windsor, passed away at 5:35 p.m. Jan. 1, 2013, at Carle Hospital in Urbana.
Funeral Services will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, with the Rev. Randy Richey of Scottsville, Ky., officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be expressed at swengel-odell.com
Darrell was born Sept. 13, 1948, the son of Charles and Betty (Hatten) Latch. He married Susan Reddish on Dec. 28, 1975, at Gaskill United Methodist Church, where he was a member.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years; his children, Christine Latch of Wilmington Island, Ga., Melissa Showalter (Andy) of Mattoon, Tammy Latch of Mattoon, Darrell Charles Latch of Yulee, Fla., and Joey Latch of Tuscola; his six grandchildren, Bailie, Drew, Daniel (Andrea), Macy, Marissa and Joey; great-grandchild due in July; parents, Charles and Betty Latch of rural Windsor; two brothers, Terry Latch (Peggy) of rural Stewardson and Charles Latch (Sherry) of Mattoon; and three sisters, Sandra Hundley (Earl) of Logan, Utah, Darlette Brasel (Denton) of Kinmundy and Paulette Ballinger (Dave) of Strasburg.
Darrell was a 1966 graduate of Windsor High School. He furthered his education and earned an associates degree in agriculture from Wabash Valley College, Bachelor of Science in forestry from Southern Illinois University, Master of Arts from Scarritt College, Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt University and he earned his Doctorate in Ministry at Vanderbilt University.
He was the owner of SonLight Power Gym. He was one of the lead promoters of power lifting across the United States. During his 30 years of power lifting he earned 13 world championships, 34 national titles and several world records; he was known for being steroid-free his entire career.
He also played and recorded music. In 1995, he made a video and received the Golden Lion Award for his music.
He spent seven years researching and writing a book about the Cherokee Trail of Tears.
Darrell will be greatly missed by his family and all the lives he touched during his life on this earth.
