Lewellys J. “Doc” Stephens, 98, of Willow Hill, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery, Stewardson. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Willow Hill United Methodist Church, St. Anthony Booster Club or St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Lewellys was born on July 31, 1914, in Strasburg, the son of Osler Z. and Josephine (Jones) Stephens. He married Vileta Tibbs on Dec. 5, 1937, in Rolling Fork, Miss., and she preceded him in death on Aug. 23, 1995. Lewellys was a member of Willow Hill United Methodist Church. He was a life member of Newton Masonic Lodge 216 and a life member of Robinson Elks Lodge 1188. Lewellys was the owner and manager of K&M Stockyards in Willow Hill. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed his three grandsons’ athletic events. Lewellys was lovingly known as “Grandad.”
Lewellys is survived by his son, Danny Z. (Linda) Stephens of Marshall; daughter, Sally (Bob) Tingley of Effingham; grandsons, Scott (Jennifer) Tingley of New Lenox, Christopher (Michelle) Tingley of Effingham and Toby Stephens of Terre Haute, Ind.; stepgrandchildren, Dr. Mindy Haws, Deke Haws, Mark Haws and Jeremy Haws; great-grandchildren, Davis Tingley, Emma Tingley, Curtis Tingley, Nicklaus Tingley, Lukas Tingley and Amelia Tingley; and six great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vileta; two brothers; and four sisters.
