ST. ELMO —
Floyd E. “Dean” Tharp, 70, of St. Elmo, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Freedom Reigns in Christ Church, St. Elmo. Burial with military rites by St. Elmo American Legion Post 420 will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Louden Township, Fayette County. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at C&A Pagel Funeral Home, St. Elmo, and one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
Dean was born Feb. 28, 1943, in Pike County, Ind., the son of Floyd J. and Laura (Price) Tharp. He married Judith C. Wolfe on June 27, 1965, at Shiloh Country Church, Hazleton, Ind. Dean was a retired truck driver for Putnam Trucking. He was a U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. veteran serving in the Vietnam War. He enjoyed NASCAR, truck racing, gardening, working in the yard, fishing, auctions and collecting Coca Cola memorabilia. His favorite thing was having children around especially his grandchildren. Dean was affiliated with the Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are his wife, Judy; sons, Kevin (special friend, Lea Reynolds) Tharp and Keith Tharp, all of St. Elmo, and Denny (special friend, Raychael Orr) Tharp of Brownstown; mother-in-law, Ruby Wolfe of Princeton, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Sherri (Jason) Tharp Einhorn of St. Elmo; brother, Donel (Peggy) Tharp of Alta Vista, Va.; sisters, Mary Case, Amelia Adams and Patty (Ed) Craig, all of Princeton, Ind., and Ruth (Jesse) Hall of Hazleton, Ind.; brother-in-law, John Denning of Princeton, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, infant James Dean and Devin Tharp; grandson, Andrew Tharp; sister, JoAnn Dunning; and father-in-law, Ross Wolfe.
