ST. ELMO —
Georgia Annabelle Shelton passed away at 11:25 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Friendship Manor, St. Elmo.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at C & A Pagel Funeral Home, St. Elmo. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery with the Rev. Kent (Pee Wee) Denton officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 21, at the funeral home and one hour prior to service time Friday.
Annabelle was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Effingham County, Altamont. She was the daughter of George Walter and Grace (Bailey) Dowds. She married Everette Brown Shelton on April 17, 1946. After her marriage to Everette, they lived on the family farm in St. Elmo.
Annabelle was raised in Altamont and attended Salem Methodist Church, where she enjoyed playing the piano for church services. Annabelle worked in St. Louis at Curtiss-Wright Airplane Factory during World War II. In the 1940s, she worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a crossing guard. Annabelle worked as a homemaker doing gardening, canning and caring for their home and children. In her spare time, she enjoyed embroidery work. She later worked at the Carriage Inn in Altamont until her retirement. Annabelle was a member of the Salem Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church in St. Elmo.
She is survived by four children, Gene (wife, Sharon) Shelton of St. Elmo, Rita (husband, Claude) Fisher of Velma, Okla., Barbara (husband, Philip) Luze of Brookings, S.D., and Paul (wife, Barbara) Shelton of St. Elmo; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Durbin of Altamont and twin sister, Avanelle Hooks of Altamont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette; parents, Grace and George Dowds; and brothers, Henry and Wayne Dowds.
