Lawrence A. Michl, 99, of Newton, formerly of Ste. Marie, passed away at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Newton Rest Haven.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton, with the Rev. Al Kemme celebrating mass. Burial will be in St. Valentine’s Cemetery in the Bend, Jasper County. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Lawrence was born Jan. 21, 1913, in Bend, Jasper County, the son of August and Phelaminia (Kerner) Michl. He married Sophia Hoffman June 4, 1936, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Ste. Marie. Lawrence owned and operated Michl’s garage in Ste. Marie for many years, later worked at Rohr’s Chevrolet in Newton and was also a farmer. He was a member of St. Thomas of the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting and tinkering on motors.
He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Sophia Michl of Newton; eight children, Fred (Linda) Michl of Olney, Jeanette (David) Kramer of Georgetown, Texas, Francis (Linda) Michl of Geneva, Judy (Marty) Barnett of Gilbert, Ariz., Michael (Jane) Michl of Grand Chain, Daniel (Sandy) Michl of Murray, Ky., Mary (Roy) Toland of Newton and JoAnne (Jack) Howard of Houston; brother, Patrick Michl of Effingham; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Michl; four sisters, Monica Dhom, Louise Anderson, Bernice Seiler and Helen Michl; and two brothers, Xavier and Marion Michl.
